Bacon Explosion: A Fan Club is Born

Posted by Jason on April 9, 2009

With the launch of our Bacon Explosion recipe we invited our readers to send us pictures of their family and friends enjoying the Bacon Explosion experience. Little did we know that thousands of you would actually take us up on the offer and flood our inbox with links, photos, movies and stories. Needless to say it’s been quite the task, but we’ve finally sorted through all of the emails, tweets and messages to bring you some of our favorite submissions.

We also had quite a few photographers try their hand at the recipe as well. Here’s the entire construction process captured through the lens of a few different artists.

Now that you’ve worked up a hunger from those photos, it’s time to take a look at a few of the spin off recipes inspired by the Bacon Explosion. If cutting the meat and biscuit separately is too much work for you, then the Bacon Explosion Wellington is exactly what you need. This recipe completely wraps the meat missile in a layer of pastry dough to create a giant hot pocket of pork.

On the other hand, if our original recipe didn’t contain enough bacon for your tastes, then we need to point you in the direction of the Bacon Implosion. In lieu of Italian sausage, our friends over at Bucky McOinkum’s used ground bacon. Yes, you read that correctly…the Bacon Implosion is 100% bacon!!!

For you vegetarians that feel the need to lurk around our meat loving community, you might be interested in checking out the Vegetable Explosion or the infamous Fakin Explosion. Rumor has it that Clint from Smoke In Da Eye had his man card revoked once the Fakin Explosion recipe hit his blog. Don’t worry Clint, I heard Aaron was picking out flowers for his wedding tonight, so you can have his. :)

One of our favorite videos was when the Houston Chronicle challenged David “SyKoBOZO” Cagle from Major League Eating to consume an entire Bacon Explosion. SyKoBOZO gave a valiant effort, but our inside sources confirmed that his last minute run to the men’s room ultimately resulted in a “reversal of fortune.” JOEY CHESTNUT….if you’re out there listening, you’re next!!!!

Obviously, eating the entire Bacon Explosion in one sitting can’t end well. But if you can do it and walk way unscathed, then kudos to you. Our favorite way of indulging in the meat monster is to invite over a bunch of friends, crack a few cold ones, and watch the big game. Coincidentally, our recipe caught the eye of the media the week before the Super Bowl, so homes all across the world were doing just that. Here’s how a few local Kansas Citians “made friends” with the Bacon Explosion.

So there you have it. As long as you keep sending us your pictures and videos, we’ll continue churning out posts like this. But to make it a little more interesting, we’re issuing you a Bacon Explosion photo challenge. Now that baseball season is in full swing, it’s time to break out those Weber Smokey Joe’s and cook up a Bacon Explosion in the parking lot of your favorite major league stadium. Send us your photos of you and your friends and family enjoying the Bacon Explosion with the stadium in site, and we’ll post them on our site. With a little determination, we’ll be able to hit up every parking lot in the MLB!!! And if you haven’t done so already, be sure to swing by the Bacon Explosion Fan Page on Facebook and publicly declare your love for the pork sword.

Too funny. Now give me my f’ing card back!!!!

Jason April 9, 2009

@SmokeInDaEye – I believe the official man law ruling was that it would reinstated once you bring home your next GC. With Q’ season kicking up, it shouldn’t be much longer.

Oh lads, it brings a tear to me eyes. BLT’s this weekend, and when summer hits up here in the far north (around August) I hope to make me a meat monster, too.

Already had it: Brad made it for the superbowl… truly the antithesis of all that is wholesome/healthy/safe for human consumption, an exquisite, concentrated nugget of pure divine glory; pound for pound the highest concentration of pounds found in-or-outside of the natural universe… poetry, in the form of meat.

I gotta try this thing. Looks heart-attackingly awesome.

Found a Bacon Weave song. Pretty funny:

Jason April 22, 2009

@Steve – Thanks! Now I’m going to have the song stuck in my head the rest of the day. :)

Death of a Bacon Explosion: I’m in mourning. After many months of threatening to do so, I made a bacon explosion right to recipe. In fact, I made two! I was going to take them to an extended family get together. Assembled them both, they looked perfect, wrapped them up, placed them in the fridge overnite & near dawn the next morning, rolled out of bed, put them on to cook, went & had a personal moment & a cup of coffee. To my horror, upon my return to check on my duet of bacon beauties, I discovered they had achieved true charcoalocity. In short, I burned the shit out of them. Both of them. I have posted the evidence here: pid=1650805&op=1&o=all&view=all&subj=49361972865&aid=-1&oid=49361972865&id=718253550

Needless to say, the male components of my extended family all burst into tears on learning of the tragedy & my brother in law has entered therapy. He’ll get over it I’m sure. As a Maestro de BBQ, I was shocked & aghast at what happened. I have been humbled. I am now more than ever determined to succesfully bring to the table my own bacon explosion. 2 lbs of thick cut bacon & 2lbs of sausage are not going to get the better of me. I soldier on bravely.

Jason May 7, 2009

@Terry – What radio station were you listening to?

Sean May 15, 2009

The one thing I changed about the recipe was the addition of shredded pepperjack cheese in the middle. I put it on the sausage under the cooked bacon. Shredding the cheese is crucial for proper rolling later and it is important to make sure you seal the sausage around the cheese completely. If you have a leak once the bubbling starts you got real problems.

I made two logs yesterday for our annual Memorial day fest. They came out perfect after 6hrs at lower temp. Everyone tried them and loved them from 2 yr olds up. The bacon explosion was was better than I could ever imagine.

Mtngant June 13, 2009

I get to try Bacon Explosion today! At Meatfest in Eugene, OR.

Patrick June 19, 2009

I have to make this.

I don’t have a smoker, any suggestions? (Apart from buying or borrowing one)

Aaron June 19, 2009

@Patrick – Although not nearly as good, we have an oven recipe, or you could buy a stovetop smoker for fairly cheap.

Kittyfishhooks June 20, 2009

Holy crap! I’m making one for my hunny! This is the most amazing and innovative … guy idea I have ever seen!

Jason June 20, 2009

@Kittyfishhooks – Let us know what you and your husband think of the final results. We’re confident you’ll be making it more than once!!!

scott June 26, 2009

just made one but i am using hambuger with bacon&cheese in the middle, hope it works?it be the bacon cheese explosion.

BigMark December 27, 2009

Well I was going to apologize for Bastardizing the Bacon Explosion with my version but seeing someone trying it with hamburger………I won’t. I went deer hunting in the Fall and got a nice 10 pointer. I decided to have some of the venison made into breakfast sausage so you guessed it I substituted the pork sausage for the venison sausage. WOW UNBELIEVABLE!!!!!! I just didn’t use any BBQ sauce because I didn’t want to mask the flavor of the 2 meats marrying their flavors together in the smoker. Excellent for the Wild Game Gastronomic Palate!
