Blue Ribbon Bacon Festival: Bacon Bacon Bacon

Posted by Aaron on March 19, 2009

Blue Ribbon Bacon FestivalA couple weekends ago, the BBQ Addicts crew ventured to Des Moines, IA for the second annual Blue Ribbon Bacon Festival. I’ve just got one word for this event: Awesome! Well, two words: Awesome Bacon! Approximately 300 bacon fanatics came to the event and Brooks Reynolds (one of the Bacon Overlords of the event) invited us up to cook 30 or so Bacon Explosions for the crowd.

We started the day with a tasty Bacon Bloody Mary and a bacon, egg and cheese biscuit (while we were vigorously trying to weave and prepare 30 Bacon Explosions). Then we had our first round of “hourly bacon tasting” which of course included the “Ohhhhhhhh BACON” scream with every serving. Here are the highlights of creating the explosions to serving the explosions and everything in between:

There were loads of great people from the world of bacon. Heather from Bacon Unwrapped was in attendance (with a stylish bacon scarf), Jason, otherwise known as Mr. Bacon Pants (with…bacon pants obviously) and a boat load of other great people who we hung out and drank beer with all day.

Let’s give some props to Heather from Bacon Unwrapped, who has a book coming out: Bacon: A Love Story: A Salty Survey of Everybody’s Favorite Meat

Here are a couple things we got to feast on during the event (I’m leaving out the beer which was being feasted on basically from start to finish):

Bacon Cheeseburgers
Bacon cheeseburgers topped with bacon wrapped jalapeños and tater tots
Nuclear Bacon Explosion

There is plenty more coverage on the festival from other bloggers and news outlets. Mr Bacon Pants has several posts, metromix Des Moines has some good interviews, Bacon Unwrapped covered it (and even pointed out someone was doing fashion critique at the bacon festival). Personally I think the Miss Piggy’s and my fiancée (the dancing bacon) win the fashion award.

Miss Piggys

Errr, not sure who these girls are…but they all have little pig ears

And as always, there was the bacon eating competition to round out the day (I was having trouble with bacon intake at that point)!

A special thanks to John Tiffany for helping us build the Bacon Explosions! We totally would have run out of time if you hadn’t been helping! Special thanks to Philip Luedtke for the use of his photos (all of which can be found here). Finally, we’d like to thank Brooks and the others who organized and invited us to the event, it was a great time and we’ve already got it on the schedule for 2010!

Wow.. Singing Jen dancing in a Bacon costume… and that video! Those guys made each Bacon Explosion in like 6 seconds flat! I could use some kitchen workers with hands that fast!

I am so envious of everyone at the Bacon Festival–I think I’m making a Bacon Explosion for Easter Day–screw the heart stents!

I just am browsing the sight and my mouth is watering. I clicked on the Nuclear Bacon Explosion and the Bacon Burgers it made it worse the picture was large and life like and made me want it more or at least the recipes anyway. Is it possible to get them and if I can get them where can I find them on the site, I am sure I’m not the only one interested.
Thanks A Bunch!!

Let’s see…Bacon Burgers are just a bacon cheeseburger with a layer of bacon on the bottom and top of the patty, with bacon wrapped tater tots on top if I remember correctly.

Nuclear Bacon Explosion adds jalapeños and habaneros to the original recipe (http://www.bbqaddicts.com/blog.....explosion/) plus some of our homemade sauces.

Thank you Aaron! I found the other one and just printed it. I see there is an oven version as my top of the stove smoker is too small. Can’t wait to make it and try it.

Great! Just be sure to elevate it off the pan with a cookie rack or something so it doesn’t sit there and soak in grease.
