The Monthly Rubdown: Plowboy’s BBQ

Posted by Jason on February 18, 2009

Now that we’ve armed you with a few killer recipes, it’s time to start filling your spice rack with the proper ammunition. Picking out the perfect rub can be an intimidating task, especially if you don’t venture into the BBQ aisle all that often. (Yes, that’s right. In Kansas City we actually have aisles of BBQ products, not just racks.) To help you see past those fancy labels and catchy names, we’ve added a new feature to our site called “The Monthly Rubdown”. Hmmmm…did I forget to mention that we’ve also got FREEBIES!!!!

Each month we’ll be featuring one of our favorite BBQ products, and whenever possible we’ll include giveaways, contests, and even have the product available for purchase right here on our site. Now don’t go thinking we’re a bunch of sell-outs that will feature any ole brand thrown our way, because that couldn’t be further from the truth. We’ll personally evaluate each and every item before anointing it with the official “BBQ Addicts’ Seal of Approval”. Only the strong will survive, and we don’t have a problem turning away the shoddy imitators.

To kick things off in style, we’re featuring a two-fer from one our favorite local KC pork masters. In fact, we like his products so much that Channel 9 News has footage of us using one of them during a Bacon Explosion demo. Take a peek and see if you can spot it…

In case you missed it, we’re talking about Plowboy’s award winning Yardbird Rub. As the label reads, it’s a perfect “balance of sweet and salty with just a little kick”. These guys may tout their custom blend as a chicken rub, but pork is where it really shines. In fact, it’s so good that these Pork Pullin’ Plowboys walked away with first place pork honors at both the Great American Barbecue Festival and the American Royal Barbecue in 2008, which got them invited to the coveted Butt to Butt Invitational in Shannon, Illinois. If that’s not enough, they were also awarded the 2008 5th place Kansas City Barbecue Society Team of the Year Award for pork. For those of you not familiar with the KCBS, there were over 4,200 teams that competed last year, so that is a HUGE honor.

Now don’t go thinking these pork loving Kansas Citians are a one dimensional outfit. Their latest creation, Bovine Bold beef rub, was brought to market in style at the 2008 American Royal Barbecue, and is primed to shake-up the competition trail in 2009. While developing the seasoning over the last year, the Pork Pullin’ Plowboys brought home 4 first place and 8 top five brisket finishes using Bovine Bold. Needless to say, these guys know their spices.

In true BBQ Addicts style, we’ve teamed up with Plowboy himself, Mr. Todd Johns, to make these rubs available right here on our site. Bottled locally in Kansas City, we’re offering a 14 ounce shaker of the freshest rub money can buy. Can’t decide which blend to spring for? Not a problem. Take advantage of our combo deal and you’ll receive both rubs at a slightly lower price. Now, I know what your thinking here. “Jason, I’m planning a block party and want to cook barbecue chicken wings for 100 of my closest friends. Is there any possible way that you can cut me a bulk deal?” Done and done. Todd has also hooked us up with 5 pound bags of both rubs! Here’s a quick rundown of what you can find in our store:

Yardbird Rub (14 oz) – $7.99
Bovine Bold (14 oz) – $7.99
Yardbird/Bovine Combo Pack (2 x 14 oz) – $14.99

Yardbird Rub (5 lbs) – $29.99
Bovine Bold (5 lbs) – $29.99

Now on to the freebies!!! The first 20 orders we receive will include a free limited edition “GET BOLD” coozie courtesy of Plowboy’s BBQ. In addition, they’ve also hooked us up with 10 t-shirts (5 male and 5 female) to give out anyway we see fit. To get in on the action, simply post a comment down below and you’re automatically entered in our t-shirt drawing (be sure to indicate your preference for a male or female shirt in your comment). We’ll be accepting entries until Midnight Central Time on February 28th. Winners will be contacted and announced a few days after. Good luck!!!

Seems to me that they need a guy wearin’ one of their shirts out here on the West coast. Hell, I don’t mind wearing a competitor’s shirt. I’m not even in the same class anywayz. :-)

I’ve heard great things about the Bovine Rub and love the yardbird. You Kansas City folks sure know how to rub us right!

Ryan February 18, 2009

Cool, I think I might just have to put an order in… PS – Loved the Bacon Explosion

Would love a guys shirt if you have some more too.

ulika February 18, 2009

I am a sucker for a free t-shirt. I would like a male shirt, but I may be able to squeeze into a female shirt. However, that might not be a good mental picture for some folks.

Leah February 18, 2009

Bovine Bold is awesome.

That is a hot rub….

This looks great—I’m thinking of a stove top smoker because the winters are so damn long up here in Minnesota. Do they really not smoke up the house? I crave a bacon explosion.

I’ll take chick size XL ’cause of my exemplary rack.

Calamity Anne February 19, 2009

Man, I’m glad I came across you guys last week. BBQ Addicts is definitely going to keep my husband and I fat and fluffy!!! A male t-shirt would look just fine on the mister.

Norton February 19, 2009

I’m new to the smoking world. Love your site, I check it often. Plowboys sounds great, I can’t wait to try it.

An XL male t-shirt referencing a pork rub might get my wife hot. Hook me up!

MY WIFE HAS 36DD”S. iWANT TO SEE HER WEARING THE T SHIRT AND NOTHING ELSE

Jason February 19, 2009

@Leah – I use both of Plowboy’s rubs quite a bit. Besides the obvious uses, I’m especially fond of Yarbdird on french fries. Sprinkle some on while the fries are fresh out of the frier/oven. Delicious!!!!

Jason February 19, 2009

Here are the sizes for the shirts we have available. We’ll try to accomodate all of the winners, but priority will be given to the order in which the names are chosen.

Male: 1 XL and 4 L
Females: 1 S, 2M, 1L, and 1 XL

Other great uses for the Yardbird rub includes veggies and popcorn. The Bovine Bold is my go to seasoning for ground beef dishes like Shepard’s Pie.

Enjoy the Plowboys gear!!! We are very proud to be the first product in the BBQ Addict’s store.

SmokeonWheels February 19, 2009

I have to add in that the pork also took first at Smoke on the Water in Hot Springs last fall as well… Yardbird is the bomb on pork. Works great on shrimp too…

We have to note that it no slouch on Yardbirds either…. It has won the GAB, and had a slew of other awards in chicken… my most recent Chicken call was 2nd place in the American Royal Open.

Rob K February 20, 2009

I have see this on the shelf at Miller Liquor in North Sioux City, SD. I am going to have to pick up some one of these day’s.

I would take a mens XL if you are still giving a way or even a sample of Yard Bird ;-)

Everytime I read your “feed” I miss KC. Arizona doesn’t do BBQ. It’s sad.
Whine, whine. (sorry couldn’t help myself)

I’d crave a T-shirt in any of the girlie sizes pleez!

Rob February 21, 2009

The Bovine Bold is one hot mama. A hot mama who keeps you satisfied AND coming back for more.

Men’s L T-shirt. could a man look any better?

Annie February 23, 2009

Ooooo, I can’t wait to try these rubs, I only use 1 kind from Memphis right now but am ready to expand my horizons. What’s this too cold to cook outside? I’m from Michigan and cook all year on 3 types of grills, outside.

Jason February 23, 2009

@Annie – These are some of my favorite rubs. In fact, I used Yardbird on the grilled chicken we had for dinner. Marvelous!!! Gotta love grilling in February!!!

PlowboysBBQ.com February 23, 2009

We seasoned some chicken soup with Yardbird rub this weekend. LOL!!!

Ron Jones February 26, 2009

WOW, Been hearing some great things about your Rubs.. Can’t wait until my order get to me. I love hearing friends ask what do you have on this meat… Man Thats Good

Jones BackYard BBQ February 26, 2009

Looking for some Rubbing…Then comes the lovin.. Thats the Chicken & Ribs of course.

Scott February 27, 2009

Your rubs look tasty. I do have to say that I prefer to make my own. Anyone who is seriously into smoking should take GREAT pride in making up their own rubs, and making their own BBQ sauces for that matter. I do, if pressed for time use a store bought sauce. But nothing gives me more pleasure than topping off a fine piece of meat I have worked all day on with my own sauce. It really wows the friends and family too!

Ryan March 5, 2009

Got my rubs last week, and the coozie is great for a rub holder!

Mike Taylor June 22, 2010

I buy the rubs once a month at bass pro shops in Altoona, Iowa
