Just in time for Father’s Day (well close enough anyway) we have another giveaway for you. If your dad (or yourself, we’re not really discriminating here) has ever wanted to make his own barbecue sauce, but never knows where to start we have a treat for you. MUG Root Beer generously gave us one of their kits to test out. They are also letting us give you, our loyal readers, 10 barbecue sauce kits for Father’s Day gifts (to be used later since I’m late). Anyway, we’re going to make this a quick contest so we’ll randomly select five people who sign up for our periodic email newsletter (we promise not to annoy you with it) and/or comment below (doing both increases your chances). We’ll pick the winners tomorrow and update this post so hurry!
I was a bit hesitant at first because I didn’t know what was going to be included in the kit, I didn’t want a bunch of pre-mixed ingredients. When I received the package I was pleasantly surprised to find all fresh ingredients inside a nice Mug Root Beer cooler! Since I have made BBQ sauce with various cola’s before (usually Dr. Pepper) I wasn’t too scared to try it out with some root beer.

As you can see it comes with all fresh ingredients, a nice cooler, and of course an Mug apron. Why is it I have like 50 aprons and never wear one? I ended up with sauce all over me again. Anyway, Mug calls the sauce The Southern Specialty Brew-B-Q Sauce and it contains MUG Root Beer (obviously) and quite a few ingredients as you can see below. The instructions were easy to follow and it only takes about 30 minutes from start to finish, and your sauce can stay refrigerated for up to 2 weeks for later use. In case you don’t win (which you really should, the cooler itself is worth it), here is the recipe:
Southern Specialty Barbecue Sauce
1 cup MUG¨ Root Beer
1 cup ketchup
1/4 cup fresh lemon juice
1/4 cup orange juice
3 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 1/2 tablespoons (packed) dark brown sugar
1 tablespoon mild-flavored (light) molasses
1 teaspoon liquid smoke
1/2 teaspoon grated lemon peel
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon onion powderInstructions:
Combine all ingredients in heavy medium saucepan. Bring to boil over medium heat, stirring occasionally. Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer until reduced to 1 1/2 cups, about 20 minutes. Season sauce to taste with salt and pepper. Cool slightly. Transfer to bowl. Cover and refrigerate. (Can be made 2 weeks ahead; keep refrigerated.)
The sauce came out nicely, with a mild tangy flavor. I took some leftover pulled pork and made a couple sandwiches and it complimented the pork nicely. It has an interesting and unique flavor. I took some pictures of the final sandwich all nice looking, but I screwed up transferring it so I’ll upload it later. Anyway, get or give a gift of a barbecue sauce kit and start on the road of making your own ingredients! (And if you run out of other ideas, the Pole Dancer Stripper Alarm Clock is always amusing).

Love your stuff!!!!
I’ll have to give this a try! Thanks for the contest too!
Yum! Count me in — nice giveaway in time for Father’s Day
I plan on making a Bacon Explosion on Father’s Day and wonder how the root beer based sauce would taste brushed on it at the end? I usually use Dr. Pepper or Cherry Coke with brisket but root beer is a great idea for sauce too.
I’m thinking of buying a CharGriller Outlaw with side smoke box, any recommendations on it or another smoker in the same price range?
Nothing like an ice cold root beer with some good ‘cue! I love Mug root beer and love your site. Thanks!
Would love to try a kit!
#want!
@Brian Good question. It’s a sweeter sauce so I bet it would offset the salty-ness of the bacon quite well. If you try it out let us know how it is!
Sign me up. I’m all for free…root beer and BBQ!

Recently found your site, and I’m inspired! Bring on the bacon! And yes, I love root beer, too…this is awesome!
I have never heard of using soda as an ingredient in BBQ sauce. You mentioned you usually use Dr. Pepper, how did the root beer compare? I need to know which I should try first.
If it has a hoof…. it is good.
@Shelby – hmmm, good question. The Dr. Pepper sauce I make is a spicy rib sauce (it’s in one of my BBQ books, forget which one at the moment). The root beer sauce is a bit more tangy/sweet so whichever you prefer. Try them both!
Always up for some free BBQ swag!

Thanks.
I wanted to nominate my dad! He is phenomenal! He works so hard for his family. Not only has he served as a police officer, he is a cancer survivor who still works more than full time to provide for his family, and help my husband & I provide for our children, one of which is disabled. My dad has always stuck by my side, and he always lets my momma know how much he loves her. He ROCKS at makin’ bar-b-q, whether its a few racks O ribs, or 26 oz. Ribeyes, or when he slow cooked 8 briskets all on his own for a wedding, hes got it goin on! I have never seen a man who watches more bar b q shows on food network! I think his dream would be to go up against Bobby Flay!
Great site!
If we don’t win, how do we order the MUG kit?
Good question, I’ll see if I can find out.
I got my BBQ Kit in the mail this week, thank you so much and keep up the great work!
@Wayne – Looks like that was just a promo they were running. You can find the recipe on their site in the recipe section: http://mugrootbeer.com/
